Manual or Automatic

Manual vs Automatic – Which Should You Choose?

Manual vs Automatic – Which Should You Learn to Drive?

Let’s settle it once and for all. From a driving instructor who teaches both.

Thinking of learning to drive but stuck choosing between manual and automatic?
It’s a big decision – and usually a permanent one once you pass. But the good news? I teach both, so I’m not trying to sell you one or the other – just give you the facts.

🔧 What’s the difference?

  • Manual: You change gears yourself using a clutch pedal. It’s the “old-school” way, but still what most people learn on.

  • Automatic: The car does the gear changes for you. Easier to drive, especially in traffic, but limits your licence.

🧠 Why go Manual?

  • Your licence covers both manual and auto cars. One pass, full freedom.

  • Manuals are often cheaper to buy and insure – especially on the second-hand market and better for younger drivers.

  • You might need it for work, like delivery driving, emergency services, or van driving.

  • Want to drive abroad or hire a car on holiday? Manuals are everywhere and cheaper to hire.

😌 Why go Auto?

  • No stalling. Ever.

  • Easier to learn, which often means fewer lessons = less cost.

  • Ideal if you’re nervous, need to get on the road fast, or have a medical condition affecting coordination.

  • Great for city drivers – no clutch means less stress in stop-start traffic.

🔍 What’s more popular right now?

In  Chingford, Woodford, Loughton and other nearby areas, automatics exploded in popularity in recent years and it’s now a pretty even split. But guess what?
Now, manual learners are finding it harder to get a manual instructor. Supply & demand, right? those wanting manual lessons can find themselves on the end of a long waiting list for an instructor.

So if you’re thinking long-term and want to get your licence for life, manual might be the smarter option right now.

✅ So… Which One Should You Choose?

Simple:
If you want the easiest and quickest path to a licence — go automatic.
If you want full flexibility, no limits on what you can drive — go manual.

Either way, I’ve got you covered. I offer both manual and automatic driving lessons.
Let’s get you on the road.
