ADI Part 2 Driving Test

ADI Part 2 Driving Test Overview

The Test is a practical test designed to assess an individual's ability to drive to an exceptionally high standard. It differs significantly from the standard learner driver test in scope, complexity, and expectations. Here at Lernin Driving School we will assess your current driving and give you a comprehensive breakdown of where you are in terms of being able to pass the part 2 test. We will then teach you what needs to be done to get you to the high standard required. It's hard, but between us it will be easy.

Here is a breakdown of what an examiner looks for during an ADI Part 2 test and how it differs from a standard driving test.

What an Examiner Looks for in the ADI Part 2 Test

1. Advanced Driving Competence

  • Smoothness: Demonstrate full control of the vehicle with smooth acceleration, gear changes, steering, and braking.
  • Forward Planning: Anticipate hazards well in advance and react accordingly.
  • Eco-Driving: Use fuel-efficient driving techniques, such as selecting the appropriate gear and avoiding unnecessary acceleration.

2. Observation and Awareness

  • Constant Observation: Use mirrors regularly and check blind spots effectively.
  • 360-Degree Awareness: Identify and respond to all road users, including cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles.
  • Judgment: Make safe and confident decisions at junctions, roundabouts, and when overtaking.

3. Precise Vehicle Control

  • Manoeuvres: Perform five manoeuvres to a high standard, demonstrating accuracy and control:
    • Parallel park at the side of the road.
    • Reverse into a parking bay and drive out.
    • Drive into a parking bay and reverse out.
    • Reverse around a corner.
    • Turn in the road.
  • Clutch and Gear Control: Avoid coasting and ensure proper use of controls.
  • Positioning: Maintain the correct lane and road position at all times.

4. Speed Control

  • Adherence to Speed Limits: Drive within the speed limits but at a speed appropriate to the conditions.
  • Making Progress: Avoid hesitation and maintain a safe, flowing pace in all road scenarios.

5. Route Knowledge and Independent Driving

  • Follow directions from a sat nav or traffic signs without significant error.
  • Demonstrate the ability to navigate effectively on various types of roads, including dual carriageways, rural roads, and urban settings.

6. Fault Tolerance

Examiners expect zero serious or dangerous faults and only 6 minor faults.

Tips for Success:

  • Use reference points for consistent positioning.
  • Check blind spots and mirrors frequently to spot other road users.

Key Preparation Tips for ADI Part 2 Test

  • Develop Superior Observational Skills: Regularly use mirrors and perform blind spot checks.
  • Master All Road Types: Practice driving on urban, rural, and dual carriageway roads.
  • Polished Maneuvers: Practice each maneuver repeatedly in different scenarios and conditions.
  • Refine Eco-Driving Techniques: Avoid excessive acceleration or harsh braking.
  • Practice Smooth Vehicle Control: Ensure all gear changes, acceleration, and braking are seamless.
  • Prepare Mentally: Stay calm and focused throughout the test.
